FOOTBALL CARDINALS
Former Helena Capital football player now with Arizona of N-F-L
HELENA (AP) - Former Helena Capital and University of Washington
standout Greg Carothers has signed a one-year deal with the Arizona
Cardinals of the N-F-L.
Carothers signed with the Cardinals just over a week after
playing for the champion Amsterdam Admirals in the N-F-L-Europe's
World Bowl. Carothers had 58 tackles during the season.
There are now ten linebackers on the Cardinals' 80-man roster
and last season the team kept eight.
Carothers is to report to minicamp on August first.
RODEO
State high school rodeo finals open in Helena
HELENA (AP) - The high school finals rodeo is underway in
Helena.
Yesterday, 12 girls and nine boys opened the competition with
the cow cutting event, but things move into high gear today and
continue through Sunday's championship finals.
This is the second consecutive year the Helena Chamber of
Commerce is sponsoring the finals at the Lewis and Clark County
Fairgrounds. More than 250 riders, ropers and bull doggers will be
taking part in the five-day event, with six stock contractors
keeping fresh horses, steers, bulls and calves ready.
The top 16 in each event compete in Sunday's championships.
PRO RODEO
Montana PRCA rodeo tour kicks off this weekend
GREAT FALLS (AP) - The 2005 Montana P-R-C-A Pro Rodeo Tour kicks
off this weekend.
The first event, the Bear Paw P-R-C-A Roundup, starts in Chinook
tomorrow and lasts through Saturday. Sunday features the one-day
American Legion P-R-C-A Rodeo in Augusta.
This year's Montana P-R-C-A tour features 18 events and ends
with the circuit finals in January.
Cash prizes of 500-dollars will be awarded to first-place
finishers in each of the seven rodeo events. The grand prize is
four-thousand dollars for the second year.
WIMBLEDON, England (AP) - Top seeds Roger Federer and Lindsay
Davenport were among the second-round winners at Wimbledon
yesterday. Third seeds Lleyton Hewitt and Amelie Mauresmo
(mohr-EHS'-moh) also won, as did number-fives Marat Safin (mah-RAHT
SA'-fihn) and Svetlana Kuznetsova (kooz-NEHT'-zoh-vah). Nikolay
Davydenko (dav-ih-DEHN'-koh) had to retire in the second set of his
match with Jonas Bjorkman.
WIMBLEDON, England (AP) - Second seeds Andy Roddick and Maria
Sharapova highlight today's second-round schedule at Wimbledon. The
slate also includes Rafael Nadal (nah-DAHL'), Tim Henman, Serena
Williams and Venus Williams.
SAN ANTONIO (AP) - The San Antonio Spurs will host the Detroit
Pistons in the first game seven of an N-B-A Finals since 1994. The
Pistons extended the series by knocking off the Spurs in San
Antonio 95-to-86 on Tuesday.
MILWAUKEE (AP) - The Milwaukee Bucks are looking for a new coach
after firing Terry Porter yesterday. The Bucks went 71-and-93 with
one playoff appearance in two years under Porter, including a
30-and-52 mark this year.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Texas has earned the right to play Florida or
Arizona State in the College World Series championship series. The
Longhorns advanced by downing Baylor 4-to-3 after the Sun Devils
stayed alive with a 6-to-1 win over the Gators. A-S-U and Florida
will square off again today.
